Program Introduction
The Master of Engineering (MEng) program in Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley is a one-year professional degree program that provides students with advanced technical knowledge and leadership capabilities. The program integrates the acquisition of cutting-edge mechanical engineering knowledge with the development of practical leadership and management skills, designed to prepare students to become engineering leaders who can solve technical problems and drive innovation in industry. Students can choose from various concentration areas including automation systems, bioengineering, energy and environment, and product design. This program is designated as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program, allowing international students to benefit from up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States. Unlike traditional research-focused master's programs, the MEng program offers practice-oriented education centered around industry-linked capstone projects. Students participate in team projects addressing real industrial problems, applying technical knowledge and practicing leadership skills. Additionally, leveraging its proximity to Silicon Valley, the program provides students with rich networking and career opportunities through connections with various technology companies and startups.
